Once considered a foreign fantasy or the worst nightmare of “real” cyclists, separated bike lanes are today transforming the bicycling experience in communities across the United States, including Austin and other Texas cities. Join engineers and urban designers from Toole Design Group in a double workshop session that will help you plan, select, design, build and maintain safe, quality infrastructure to increase bicycle use in your community. Toole Design Group has literally written the manual on this topic, creating the Separated Bike Lane Planning and Design Guide for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation in 2015. Since then, TDG had designed and built numerous separated bike lanes in cities across the country, learning continually along the way. This experience is currently being used to draft new chapters for the next edition of the AASHTO Bike Guide, the standard reference book for state and local transportation agencies throughout the United States.
