Review and hike phase one of the Violet Crown Trail which has become a popular destination for a wide variety of trail users. The discussion will center on how different community resources where employed to both build and maintain the trail. Participants will learn about technical trail building, volunteer recruitment, environmental education, developing cooperative agreements with governmental agencies and non-profit organizations.
Participants should come prepared for a mildly strenuous hike involving some steep slopes and uneven ground. Appropriate shoes and clothing should be worn for the hike. If available, bring a water bottle which can be filled at the site.
Butch Smith has a 30 year career with various organizations including the Bureau of Land Management, Park Planner for the City of Austin and Trail Manager for the Hill Country Conservancy.
